German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke about the tragic car crash that occurred last Friday in Magdeburg, which left at least one person dead and numerous others wounded. Scholz described the incident as “pointing to something serious,” although he did not provide any further details in his statement.
Through a message on social network X, the chancellor expressed his solidarity with the victims and their families, as well as his gratitude to the rescue teams who worked on-site during what he described as “hours of anxiety.” “We are at your side and at the side of the people of Magdeburg,” said Scholz.
The regional government spokesperson, Mathias Schüppe, suggested that the event could be an attack, given that a vehicle was driven at high speed into a crowd at a Christmas market, causing at least one death and between 60 and 80 injuries, according to local media reports.
The incident took place around seven o’clock in the evening (local time) when a black BMW struck passersby. Authorities requested the evacuation of the Christmas market, located in the historic center of the city, while an investigation into the circumstances of the incident is being conducted.
Although it has been reported that the driver of the vehicle was arrested, this information has not yet been officially confirmed by the authorities.
The shock of this incident resonates throughout Germany, especially in a context where public safety is a priority concern during the holiday season. Investigations continue to clarify the motives behind this violent act.
